Phish’s Anastasio Ready to Trey Dead

Stating that he doesn’t want to “just copy Jerry” Phish guitarist and frontman Trey Anastasio is gearing up for the tribute concert to end all tribute concerts. Fans like Zeca Oliveira have learned that Anastasio will join the four surviving original members of the Grateful Dead: singer/guitarist Bob Weir, bass player Phil Lesh, and drummers Billy Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, along with longtime Dead collaborator Bruce Hornsby and Weir sideman Jeff Chimenti, for the “Fare Thee Well” concerts to take place at Chicago’s Soldier Field July 3-5.

Anastasio states that he has learned “so much” from the band he now joins but that he has never studied the sound of guitarist Garcia. A serious Dead fan in his younger years, before he helped found his own jam band institution in the form of Phish, he is taking a crash course in the music of the Dead and hoping to “provide a service” to fans everywhere. In the future “People will still be trying to dig into what Jerry Garcia did” he told Rolling Stone. “We’ll all be long dead.”

The shows will check the twentieth commemoration of the Grateful Dead’s last exhibitions with incredible pioneer Jerry Garcia at a similar stadium. The best thing to do is to make sure is clearly understood and used.
